The moment the race was lost? Richie Porte attacks early on Old Willunga Hill. Cadel Evans has to respond as the Sky rider is only 33 seconds down on GC and there’s a 10 second time bonus waiting on the finish line.
But there’s a headwind and if Porte rides away, Evans pays a price for his efforts and gets caught and passed by Simon Gerrans who finishes second and collects the six second time bonus to lead the race by just one second.
There are two intermediate sprints with 3-2-1 seconds plus 10-6-4 seconds on the finish line for the final stage in Adelaide so it might not be the expected victory parade.
Porte’s attack brings back memory of something he said about Valverde during the Tour de France last summer:
“He attacked so early and it takes a fair set of swingers to do that”
