I’m delighted that Marco Pinotti won the final stage of the Giro.
But did he have a little extra help from the Carabinieri motorbike?
If he did well done for capitalising on it. He is a top time triallist who has won the final stage of the Giro before so today’s result is no surprise.
A year ago he was lying in hospital with a fractured hip after he and Craig Lewis crashed out of the 2011 Giro during Stage 19.

The sprinters arrive. Note only a few spectators remain and the empty stands behind them.
As soon as the sprinters cross the finish line they must turn around and head back downhill to the team bus.

A lot of riders needed to be caught by helpers after the finish line earlier today, otherwise they might have keeled over.
Even the stage winner Roman Kreuziger wobbled during his victory salute, the front wheel began to turn and he had to grab the bars to keep upright which explains the hand movements in the image above.

Ivan Basso like you’ve never seen him before: out of the saddle.
The Italian is a bit of diesel who climbs very well but without intense bursts of power, preferring instead to asphyxiate his rivals with a high tempo. This might be the first photo I can remember where he’s standing on the pedals.
He rode strongly to eliminate several rivals and whilst it’s too early to be sure, he might well have bought himself a podium spot with today’s riding.

Raimondas Rumsas finished third in the 2002 Tour de France before his disgrace and downfall when his wife was caught with a supply of banned substances.
These days he rides gran fondo races in Italy and appears on Lithuanian television dancing competitions.
Hopefully from today Ramunas Navardauskas will become the country’s best known cyclist.
